Expectations & Grading (Mark to Date)

grading:40% Class Attendance and Participation. 30% Reading Quizaes; 30% Final Group Book Report; 10% Final Exam or Visitation

Class Participation: 40%

On-time attendance and class participation is required in this course. If late <30', you will loose 50% of the marks for that class. If late >30', then you are considered absent for the class. Eight (8) marks will be lost from the final grade for each class absence.Since marks include participation, students who fall asleep in class may loose all marks for that class.

Student Responsibility: 6P

Reading Quizzes: 30%

Twelve (12) or thirteen (13) weekly quizzes at the beginning of class will provide feedback on whether you understood the basics of the required readings. If late, you will miss the quiz (0 marks). Except for extenuating circumstances, there are no make-up quizzes.

Group Presentation: 20%

  1. Form a small group (2 → 4 persons maximum)
  2. Decide on one (1) of the four (4) media formats for your presentation

    Book Report
    1. Learn about the person's life by reading his biography (books are in the library ‐ with the exception of Bach, there are sufficient copies for each group member to take a copy home to read.)
    2. Your 12' presentation should closely follow the story in the book.
    Interview
    1. Learn about the person's life story by interviewing them.
    2. Prepare a 12' presentation based on the interview and present to the class.
    PerformPrepare and perform a 8~12 minute skit/play that either illustrates events in the life of Socrates OR one or more parables of Jesus OR a story written by Homer. All members of the group should be involved.
    Video
    Intro
    1. View the video of the person's life story.
    2. Prepare a 6' presentation in Chinese introducing the English language video so students in the class can understand it easily. Note that the maximum mark for this option is ≤15/20.
    3. (After your presentation, the class will view the video.)
  3. Choose an influential person from the list.
  4. Apply to present this person using this form (Deadline: Week 9, starting 2024 failure to submit on time is 'D ' for midterm grade)
  5. Wait until you receive approval from the facilitator. (Presentation topics will be awarded in a first come, first served basis to avoid duplication.)
  6. 📥︎ Download the Presentation and Mark Form, fill it in, print it, and give it to your TA.
  7. Learn about the person's life (by reading the book, watching the video, or interviewing the person)
  8. Prepare your presentation with your small group members. As you prepare, take care to take note of this person's
  9. Upload your power point first draft (Deadline: Week 14)
  10. Present in front of the class. You may divide the presentation so that all members speak, or, have one member give the whole presentation. Both are acceptable. (Time slot will be decided on random for either Week 15, 16, or 17)
A presentation based on Wikipedia can expect the Big-Oh! (i.e. 0/20) Follow the links for an example of a good and a poor presentation on the life of Abraham Lincoln.

Impact in the Present: 10%

Choose one (1) of the two (2) options (i.e. Visitation XOR Examination)
Visitation
  1. Choose a location from the list of approved venues and suggested activities where the speakers are trying to apply these classic teachings to life today.(If you regularly attend one of these venues, you may not use this for your visit!)
  2. Before the visit, 📥︎ download and print the report form.
  3. During the visit, record your observations on the report form. (Example) (Remember a leader of the activity stamp or sign your report form)
  4. After the visit (and before the deadline), take a picture of the completed form and ↑ upload to the portal.
  5. Hand in the hardcopy during class.
